You and Pocahontas

This is going to be an unique Disney story, not only because the Pocahontas Disney movie was a musical from 1995, but the entire story of the main character is going to be exciting, and very different than the latest Disney stories. The entire story starts in 1607, when Susan Constant, one of the characters of this story travels from England to America with a group of new settlers to find gold and create new towns. They end up in the Powhatan tribe, where Pocahontas lives with his entire family.

Pocahontas is considered a Disney princess, because even from the beginning of the Pocahontas musical, you will soon learn that she is an actual princess. Pocahontas’ father is the chief Powhatan, of the tribe with the same name, so that makes her automatically a princess. Pocahontas has a special character, and she doesn’t think that she is ready to be a wife to anyone, being that she is a true dreamer. The Chief has other plans though, because he wants his daughter to marry one of his best warriors from the tribe, so that when he steps down as Chief, his princess daughter and her husband to take really good care of the tribe and protect is the best way possible. The warrior’s name is Kocoum.

The beginning of the story starts like most of the Disney movies with princesses. There’s a princess living in a big kingdom, and she is about to get married, but she doesn’t want too yet. Pocahontas games are not going to make an exception, and you will see that she seeks guidance from Grandmother Willow, who is a willow tree, to which the Powhatan people seek wisdom in difficult times. Grandmother Willow predicts the arrival of the English people in the tribe, and that will only mean trouble for the Powhatan people, so she wants to make things right from the beginning and keep the tribe safe.

One of the English leaders is Governor Ratcliffe, and he has a guy that is good at everything, which he sends to build small settlements for people to live in. Once he starts his task, Jamestown or John, goes into the wilderness to find wood and supplies that he will need to build the barracks, where he meets with Pocahontas for the first time. The encounter is a little bit weird, because John speaks English, and he doesn’t understand Pocahontas’ language, and the other way around. Even though the language issue blocks them from actually communicating, the two characters start to talk the same language with the help of Grandmother Willow. The two bond over the fascination of the two worlds they are coming from, and want to learn and understand the culture even more.

During all their interactions, Pocahontas and John eventually fall in love. Princess Pocahontas is still waiting to get married with Kocoum, but she realizes that she loves John and not the big and powerful warrior from her tribe, which is unspoken until then inside the tribe. For the first time, the Powhatans and the English fight, after which the Chief forbids natives to have any interaction with the intruders, which Pocahontas find hard, and sneaks out the tribe to meet with her love.
