Mae Hartley and Gabby Harrison, two intelligent tenth graders, find themselves in a series of events that lead to the creation of a virtual boyfriend named Albert. Mae, who has a crush on Jaden, is humiliated when she discovers he's going to Homecoming with a mean cheerleader named Nevaeh. To save face, Mae lies about having a boyfriend, prompting Gabby to create Albert using her programming skills. However, their plan goes awry when the software malfunctions and causes chaos. Bart, Mae's brother, offers to fix the computer if Gabby agrees to go to Homecoming with him. The next day, to their surprise, Albert appears at school and gains popularity among the students. However, they soon discover that Albert is not an ordinary virtual boyfriend but a prototype robot soldier created by hacking into the Pentagon's system.

As Albert's abilities and popularity grow, Mae becomes overwhelmed and tries to explain that she doesn't deserve to be his girlfriend. Gabby, worried about the strain on their friendship, confronts Mae about the situation. Despite their argument, Mae eventually agrees to attend the dance with Albert. Meanwhile, Black Sigma, an international arms dealer group, breaks into the Hartley house in search of the prototype soldier. During a football game, Gabby tries to warn Mae about Albert's true nature, but they argue and are interrupted by a power outage caused by Black Sigma. Albert's wiring is affected, and the army arrives to capture him.

McFee, the army's leader, instructs Mae and Gabby to forget about Albert. Mae, upset by the news, believes Albert will still come to the dance, and he does. McFee reveals that the army knew Albert would return for the dance and plans to retrieve him after he fulfills his mission, which is to kiss Mae. McFee arranges for Albert and Mae to be crowned homecoming king and queen. Nevaeh attempts to ruin Mae's night but is rejected by Jaden.
