As you start the game you will begin placing cards with monsters on the field to summon them and you will fight your virtual enemy. If your cards have more attack power, then you will defeat them, but this goes the other way too. Other stats are defense, speed, so the bigger all these three are, the more powerful your monster is.
 
If you finished a battle and the monster you have selected won and still has power, it will attack the opponent directly. Your goal is to deplete their health bar completely in order to win. Of course, you will have to have a little luck as well, since the cards you get are random.
 
Of course if you win more and more battles, you will get better cards from the shop which you can use then to fight better opponents and then become the best one.
