A very useful upgrade is the magnet upgrade that will allow you to draw coins towards you automatically as they are made out of metal and sometimes you will also have to grab a key from the course because without it, the portal will not open if it is locked, so look out for those as well, and also eliminate the square monsters by jumping on their head.
