After clipping out of reality, you find yourself trapped in an endless landscape of rolling green hills and hollow cardboard houses. The world feels artificial, frozen in time, and deeply unsettling.
What seems quiet and harmless during the day quickly transforms into something far more dangerous. Your only objective is clear: survive and find a way to escape. The game follows a tense two-phase loop that constantly shifts the atmosphere. During the day, you must explore the empty neighborhood and scavenge cardboard homes for essential supplies such as batteries and Almond Water.
Preparation is crucial, because when night falls, it happens instantly. There is no gradual sunset, only sudden darkness. At night, hiding becomes your primary goal, as deadly entities awaken and begin to hunt. Several terrifying creatures patrol Level 94. The Animations move like broken, faceless puppets, and your only option is to run when you see them.
Skin-Stealers track their prey through sound, forcing you to remain completely silent and hide in closets when necessary. Smilers appear in the darkness with glowing teeth, and you must use your flashlight to repel them. Every encounter requires quick reflexes and careful resource management. The experience emphasizes hardcore survival mechanics. You must manage limited batteries, monitor your stamina, and protect your sanity as tension builds.
Immersive audio design plays a vital role, as distant footsteps and subtle sounds often provide the only warning of danger. Players can choose between Story Mode, which features voice acting and narrative elements, or Immersive Mode for a more atmospheric and isolated experience. The open world encourages exploration of the infinite neighborhood and its eerie surroundings. You play as Chamomile, an art student lost within the liminal spaces of the Backrooms.
